A deadly cold spell continues to grip the United States, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and claiming multiple lives as frigid conditions linger across the South and Northeast. Authorities are warning that the extreme weather is far from over, with another winter storm expected to hit parts of the East Coast this weekend.
The severe winter storm, which stretched over 1,300 miles from Arkansas to New England, left snow-covered roads and ice-laden surfaces in its wake. Freezing temperatures reached as far south as Tennessee, Arkansas, and North Carolina, with northern Florida experiencing lows near 25°F (-3.9°C).
The storm has severely disrupted travel, with tens of thousands of flights canceled over the weekend. Power outages remain widespread, particularly in Tennessee and Mississippi, affecting more than 410,000 homes and businesses. Emergency crews are working around the clock to restore electricity and deliver essential supplies to communities in need.
Tragically, at least 50 deaths have been reported so far. Among them, three young brothers aged 6, 8, and 9 died after falling through ice on a private pond near Bonham, Texas. Other fatalities include individuals exposed to the extreme cold, accidents on icy roads, and incidents related to winter activities.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions against hypothermia and frostbite, avoid unsafe heating methods, and stay updated on local advisories. Shelters have been set up for those without power, while National Guard units are assisting with relief operations.
“This could be the coldest stretch in decades for some areas,” warned the National Weather Service, highlighting that conditions are expected to worsen before improving.
As the nation braces for additional snow and record-low temperatures, authorities emphasize the ongoing dangers of extreme winter weather and the need for continued vigilance.
